I believe that Aspergers is a separate condition than Autism because human brains have changed a lot in the new century. In the 20th century hardly anybody was diagnosed with Autism. It was a pretty rare condition and Aspergers didn't even exist. Even though, when I was growing up in the 1990s and I was so much like Daria Morgandorfer who, I consider to be the ultimate example of a female with Aspergers, I was considered a brain. I didn't get an official diagnosis of Aspergers until 2011. At that time Aspergers was the disorder in vogue and everybody and their grandmother had the Aspergers label slapped on them.
